How the Higher Maths exam works

SQA Higher Maths is assessed by two papers worth 110 marks combined. We make sure students are confident in both.

  • Paper 1 (non-calculator) — tests pure technique and mental fluency, so we drill algebra, surds, indices and exact-value trigonometry until they are automatic.
  • Paper 2 (calculator) — longer applied questions where method marks matter; we coach clear working and SQA-style layout.
  • Grades A–D are awarded on the combined result, so we target the high-tariff calculus and the circle questions where marks are won and lost.

Whether your child is at a Pollokshields, Shawlands or Govanhill school, or anywhere across Glasgow Southside, we tailor every lesson to their school's teaching order and prelim timetable.

Frequently asked questions

What does Higher Maths cover in the Scottish Curriculum?
SQA Higher Maths builds on National 5 and covers expressions and functions, relationships and calculus, and applications. Core topics include differentiation and integration, the equation of the circle, vectors in three dimensions, the wave function, recurrence relations, the straight line and exponential and logarithmic functions. Our tutors teach every unit against the current Scottish Curriculum specification.
How is the Higher Maths exam structured?
Higher Maths is assessed by two SQA papers. Paper 1 is non-calculator and Paper 2 allows a calculator. Together they total 110 marks, with grades A to D awarded on the combined result. We drill both papers using past-paper practice and SQA-style marking so students learn the exact technique examiners reward.
Do you tutor Higher Maths online or in person in Glasgow?
Both. We tutor Higher Maths in person from our Pollokshields (G41) Tuition Centre — convenient for Shawlands, Govanhill and the wider Glasgow Southside — and online for students anywhere in Scotland.
My child got a good National 5 but is struggling with Higher Maths. Can you help?
Yes — this is one of the most common reasons families come to us. The jump from National 5 to Higher is steep, especially calculus and the algebra-heavy questions. One-to-one tuition closes that gap quickly with targeted practice on the exact topics holding a student back.
Do you help with the Higher Maths prelim and final SQA exam?
Absolutely. We run focused prelim prep blocks every January and exam-intensive Higher Maths sessions from March to May, covering both papers, formula recall and SQA paper technique.
