Private maths tutor, one-to-one: what a lesson looks like
A private maths tutor is only worth paying for if the hour goes on your child's gaps, not on a plan written for someone else. I start every block with a marked past paper question set, then build the next six weeks around the three question types that cost the most marks. Usually that is two or three topics, not the whole course.
Some students need three sessions and some need thirty. I cannot predict which from a registration form, and I will tell you within the first fortnight if a different study habit would help more than extra lessons. A student who is lost in Relationships at National 5 often has an old gap in algebraic fractions, and no amount of exam practice closes that until the gap itself is fixed.
One-to-one is my default. Small groups suit confident students who want the pace of a classroom, and I will say honestly when I think a student is not one of them.
